CLIENT CASE STUDY

Airbnb and family accommodation in Martinborough

Melinda, Steve and their two-year-old son live on a 1,056sqm property in Martinborough, surrounded by vineyards in the beautiful South Wairarapa.

When the family moved to the property in 2013, they wanted to be able to accommodate friends and whānau visiting from out of town. So, they decided to work towards building a second dwelling on site when they had the equity to do so.

“Two adjacent lots make up our section, so that made our decision to build a little easier”, says Melinda.

“We needed somewhere for our family to stay, and the property overlooks a vineyard so it doubles as unique Airbnb accommodation for wine trailers and weekenders. We get the best of both worlds – we get to spend more time with family, while opening it up to Airbnb’ers which helps to pay off both mortgages.”

Melinda has years of experience working in the real estate industry, so she knows how long it can take to complete a conventional build. She knew that building modular was the way to go, so the couple focused their search on modular building companies.

“It was the EasyBuild Wairarapa show home that sealed the deal for us, along with the reasonable price of course. We walked in and couldn’t hear any road noise whatsoever, despite the show home being positioned on a busy road. We get heavy traffic coming past our corner site, so it was important to find a solution that would reduce or eliminate road noise. We also loved the quality of the finishes and how tidy and exact everything felt. It was just what we had in mind.”

Melinda and Steve opted for an EasyBuild Raglan design because of its clean lines and monopitch roof line. The design complements their own home and fits nicely on site, with the master bedroom in the secondary dwelling facing away from their own bedroom in the main house.

“We made a few tweaks here and there to suit our personal style. We used a subway tile in the kitchen and bathroom, and changed the cupboard handles in the kitchen, but that’s about it.”

Despite some setbacks due to Covid-19, the build was completed in 6 months and the couple was impressed with the service provided.

“Hyrum and the team at EasyBuild Wairarapa were easy to work with. They communicated with us right the way through, and quickly responded to any issues we raised. I can’t fault their service.”
